Will the Real Drag Queen Please Stand Up?

Tuesday, August 24th, 2004

As bimbos get older (the tender age of 28 is old in bimbo years) they start to resort to excessive plastic surgery and heavy makeup to hide subtle lines. For some reason, when they inflate their lips, silicone their chests and lay it on thick with the base, eyemakeup and mascara (a-la Tammy Faye) they start to look like drag queens (a male’s exaggerated perception of what female sexuality is). Check it out. One is obviously Pamela Anderson. The other, famous New York drag diva Amanda Lepore. Freaky.

The Past

Sunday, August 22nd, 2004

Sometimes this elusive word, “the past,” comes back to “haunt” you. You wonder if you’re being given a second chance to make things better or being given a second look at a stagnant situation that will never grow.

I’m one of those people who cannot live my life unexamined or stagnate for too long. For me, the pulse of life is a rhythm backdrop urging me to move forward into the unknown. The unknown is a scary “concept” to those for whom hope has run dry. But I still believe that there is something amazing around the corner.

Right now I feel saddened because a specter from my past has returned to my life but wants to freeze the motion on a frame that we’ve already played out. If it weren’t for the fact that that this spirit has meant something great to me and is, to me, extraordinary, I would not even be considering imprisoning myself in a loop like that.

Why do stagnation, intertia and fear seem to wield more power in this world than dynamism, change and hope? I’m genuinely curious as to the answer.

AlienNation: An Open Letter to John Kerry

Monday, August 16th, 2004

Attn: Kerry Campaign and the DNC.
The following reflects a collective disappointment in the party and candidate we have supported, and urges you to reconsider your stance on pre-emptive strikes at countries which have not attacked us.

In recent weeks, John Kerry and the Democratic National Committee have taken a stance on foreign policy that is more to the right than ever, narrowing the difference between Bush and Kerry. He has stated that even knowing what we now know about a lack of WMD in Iraq, he still would have supported an invasion there.

Before this, many liberals had foregone third party support in favor of what they thought was a candidate who was decidedly different from Bush, Mr. Kerry. Now, in light of this recent statement it seems that George W. Bush and John F. Kerry are more similar than ever.

Our “pre-emptive” strike against a nation that did not attack us was the very core premise that drove many of us (even those who have never voted or taken an interest in politics before) to support of Kerry in this election. It is unforgiveable that the DNC and Kerry would turn their backs on their core supporters in order to play lap-dog to the handful of Republican voters that MIGHT swing and vote for Kerry.

Many of us have contributed to the Kerry campaign, gotten involved with grassroots liberal groups like MoveOn.org–put our time and money into supporting the democrats, only to be betrayed by “our own” party. Please see: http://www.guerrillanews.com/war_on_terrorism/doc5053.html . This “Republican veiled as a Democrat” stance will lose Kerry votes. Hundreds of first time voters who would have run to the polls because of their outrage against this war, will not. In the wake of “Fahrenheit 9/11″ and the possibility of a new draft, what young non-voter wants to vote now, given
that BOTH candidates appear equally likely to send them to their deaths based on a hunch?

We urge Kerry stop being a typical politician and respond to Bush’s challenge with an equally confident “NO. I would not have gone in to Iraq, KNOWING WHAT WE KNOW NOW. We were fooled by your lies, but we now know the truth.” When will the democrats become as brazen as the Republicans and speak their minds without hedging and apology?

There are many of us out there who feel this way. Do not forget that WE, not only the conservative swing voters, can make or break this election. Let’s put some deserved pressure on them. Bush is a disaster of epic proportions but we do not want to do anything stupid, people! Perhaps the democrats have us “in the bag” for Election 2004 because we feel that we must vote against the candidate most likely to defeat Bush. However, the democratic party should be warned that if it continues to move to the Right just to bait swing voters and does not listen to what its core liberal faction asks, we will not (when given a proper choice) vote democrat in 2008. We beg the party to have the foresight to listen to the people and not to say ANYTHING to get on-the-fence voters to vote democrat. The future of the party depends on it.

Please forward this message to the following e-mail addresses, as well as to
like-minded friends. Leave the subject title the same, so they can see us as
a large group of like-minded democrats.

X Thoughts

Thursday, August 12th, 2004

It’s Mercury Retrograde. I’m steeped in nostalgia. He recently made contact. But it seems he hasn’t changed. He’s baiting me with a single bread crumb so I’ll beg for more like I used to. If he stuck his neck out, owned up to what he put me through, in short respected me, I could see him as the great person I once did.

A happy belated birthday to my favorite model of masculinity, Sam Elliott who just turned the big 6-0. ! Apparently he was born on August 9th. I only know this because August 9th was my Mayan birthday this year (3 kan).

Here’s to the man whose deep and gravely voice sends even bull-headed women into a swoon. Here’s to the man who is at his best playing sexy laid-back bikers (in “Mask”) and cowboys (in “Tombstone”). Let’s not forget the story of the socialite who develops a relationship with the man who raped her and killed her boyfriend, played by Sam (”A Death in California). Lastly, no one could have played Card Player #2 in “Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid” as well as…Sam Elliott.

The last of a dying breed? Oh God, I hope not. Tell all the wussy sensitive New Age guys to lock up their ladies. There’s only one Sam.

August Horoscopes

Sunday, August 1st, 2004

Everyone was talking about a blue moon last month on July 31st. That’s when two full moons occur during the same calendar month-the second one is blue. This is a “really neat” thing but not monumental in astrology. However, when two moons occur consecutively in the same sign it’s much more impactful, especially if this sign is heavy in your chart. This month, towards the middle, we’ve got a second new moon in sidereal Cancer, so those of you born between July 16 and August 16 should feel the effects most intensely. It’s like a double-whammy of energy in your life. And for other signs this means a double whammy of energy in that particular area of your chart.

Let’s not forget that Mercury is retrograde from the 9th of August through the 2nd of September causing chaos, miscommunication and communication glitches. However, this month, it’s retrograde in the same house Jupiter has been occupying for a year. My prediction is that the chaos will be directed chaos that we can all learn from. There will be a certain divine and joyful absurdity to it all and we’ll be able to look to our pasts for assistance as we move towards the end of the summer.

(January 15th-February 12th)
Ok, it’s called O.P.P, it stands for (in its censored sense) Other Peoples’ Propety, and you’re not down with it. Any joint finances could prove troublesome or at the very least a bit confusing and chaotic this month as mercury moves backwards in this sector of your chart. Partnerships of all kinds (business and personal) will be the focus of August. Remember that your strength this month is in organizing and keeping things ordered. If you can bring this to the table with your partner, you can probably make it through the rough patches. There will be a final bump at the end of the month pertaining to a financial situation. It will come to a head and you will, ever so smoothly, resolve it.

(February 13th-March 13th)
Uranus opposition your sign has been bringing many a strange relationship conundrum to you in recent years. Now, as three of the planets stack up against Uranus; Mercury, Jupiter and Mars, expect pretty much the unexpected to materialize in your partnerships. This line-up is also telling you to be open to unusual solutions (and people) where pairing off is concerned. This is also your last chance (through the middle of next month) to be blessed with baffling but positive learning experiences where partnerships are concerned, as Jupiter, planet of knowledge takes a last stand in your 7th house. Be all sponge and soak it up. What you learn now will take you through the next five year cycle.

(March 14th-April 13th)
This could be the perfect month to solidify things in a work situation that involves an offer or project from the past. This holds especially true if you work from home or own a family business. Creativity abounds as a second new moon graces this house in your chart. It will be an opportune time to blend your creative juices with a knack for organization. This is, however, not a good time to seal the deal with new projects because Mercury, planet of communication and the intellect will be retrograde all month. And don’t start to create a new computer networking system. The key lies in the past. And if you are willing to dig deep and make phone calls to revive past interests this retrograde period will really pay off.

(April 14-May 14)
With a second (rare) new moon in your house of domesticity, you’re getting double the chance to sort out all crap related to this house. At the same time, planets are stacked up in the house that governs creativity and romance. If you are in a romantic involvement that’s at a threshold this could be the perfect time to take it a step further, moving in together or making this person a part of the family. Communications will be excellent when dealing with those from your past (a little bit haywire when it comes to new people) so you can profit from this to smooth over any rough patches. If the above situation is not the scenario, then conversely, it is a time when much of your creativity will go into home improvement. Ask siblings for help and advice. But don’t go at anything like the plumbing, electricity and inner-workings until September.

(May 15-June 14)
This month, home is where the heart is, and where all of the planets are stacked up. Financial dealings related to the home should go smoothly. There may be some glitches in communication, however, so if you are buying a new couch, renting a new apartment or buying a house, make sure to doublecheck EVERYTHING. August 1st through the 8th will be the best time to sort it out. The new moon in that very same house (the house of communication) will make you question how you explain yourself to others as some miscommunications inevitably ensue. The nutty month ends with a possible misunderstanding or debate at work. Emotions get heated. If you keep your cool head and button your lip, everything should work out fine.

(June 15-July 15)
August is one wacky month filled with miscommunications and bizarre logic. Because you will be extremely attractive to others at this time, and the ‘mic’ will be passed to you, you’ll use it to make your voice heard. The problem is that you’ll be speaking just to hear yourself speak. This can naturally frustrate those around you. By the end of the month, an argument about core beliefs, like values, spirituality or politics could make you explode. Take heed and you can turn this into an inspiring epiphany rather than a zealous diatribe.

(July 16-August 16)
Take advantage of the double-energy that this second new moon in your very own house is giving off. If you had been slacking off this summer (who hasn’t), mid/late August will be another opportunity to get on the ball. Finances, and matters related to security (this includes emotional security) will be center stage. Past finances play largely into this. This would include things like royalties, or checks that you had been waiting for ages, for example. The full moon at the end of the month makes shared finances a subject of conversation. On a metaphysical or emotional level, August is a month of becoming stronger and more secure by learning to give and share with others on an intimate level. Issues pertaining to this, from the past, will definitely come back to haunt you one last time before you finally move on.

(August 17-September 16)
It’s all about you this month. Isn’t that great? Well, it would be if it weren’t for the fact that you’re feeling so damned mercurial. You can’t seem to make up your mind on just about everything. You do best by making your decisions behind the scenes and not asking twice and thrice for good advice. The good news is that friends are just loving you this month. And you’re, of course, being you, loving the attention. An old flame, acquaintance or partner will resurface in the second half of the month and you’ll have a chance to hash some unfinished business out, either verbally or sexually. Have fun!

(September 17-October 17)
This is probably going to be a difficult month for you, if you resist change and personal growth. Three planets are stacked up in your 12th house of the subconscious and one of them is retrograde. You may find yourself using your friends or a friend as the sounding board for a whole lot of psychological backwash. Do not worry, they will be patient and amicable. You absolutely need to rehash certain core issues that have decayed like cavities in your psyche. A health issue could come up at the end of the month. Remember, even if nothing is glaring, be cautious and take precautions. Despite all of this heaviness, your work life is relatively easy-going this month and should provide, believe it or not, solace from your emotional demons.

(October 18-November 15)
This is the time of year when a new career cycle begins for you. Because it occurs during a mercury retrograde period, it is likely that opportunities could come through past endeavors. Old friends pop back in to say hello and bring career opportunities in-tow. If these ‘breaks’ are in publishing, law, philosophy or education, things look extremely good. If none of those fields apply, you should be cautious of any career offers and make sure that they jive with your larger plan and values. Now is not the time to compromise your vision. You can actually get further by taking a stand and sticking to your guns with regards to what you believe in. By the end of the month, you’ll experience a huge creative surge. So go with it and success will inevitably follow.

(November 16-December 15)
Get ready for an intense career month, especially if you are involved in publishing, law, philosophy or education. Opportunities that you thought had passed you by, or old projects now resurface, making up for lost time with added vigor. Mark your calendar for the week of the 16th. Good news will come in relation to a project or investment. The full moon at the end of the month in your fourth house of domestic affairs will bring things to a head and allow you to start a new cycle (move, renovate, get a new roommate) by September 2nd when both expansive Pluto and ‘connected’ Mercury will move forward together at last, opening your mind up to possibilities you would not have thought of before.

(December 16th-January 14th)
August could very well turn out to be the punctuation period of the summer. With three planets in your Jupiter-ruler’s house (including Jupiter itself) you will be totally in your element, absolutely free to be yourself and flourish. This is especially true if you have ties to publishing, law, foreign countries or people or higher education. People and situations from the past will occupy your mind. Old foreign friends or schoolmates and old large-scope projects will return. You will function especially well in partnerships of all kinds this month (work or romantic). So remember, it’s always going to work better if you can get help from someone or go off exploring with someone. A second new moon in your house of joint resources offers a second chance to square away a situation that involves your money and someone else’s.
