New & Noteworthy in L.A. - Summer '07

ONE SUNSET, 8730 Sunset Blvd., W. Hollywood
323-657-0111

The latest stop circa compound Hilton, on the Sunset Plaza, is the minimally named restaurant and lounge, One Sunset--West Coast sister to One Manhattan. Specializing in new creative American cuisine with an emphasis on small plates, the venue opened its doors to much fanfare in June. Hollywood royals Demi Moore, Ashton Kutcher, and Jennifer Anniston were among the names that flocked to the opening event at this hot spot--which, despite its prime strip location, is inconspicuous. The setting is equally contradictory--decadent yet sedate with its screen image perfect lighting. The tented Champagne Bar is truly 'Moroccan Roll.'

Choose from a host of dishes including coffee and molasses braised shortrib "sopes" with glazed baby carrots, wasabi crème and watermelon radish; and proscuitto encrusted white shrimp with pineapple, roasted Serrano, pickled red onions and upper ranch. Enjoy after-dinner cocktails like the signature One Sunset (Patron Gold, blood orange juice, lemon juice and honey), and the Green MarTEAni (Skyy Citrus and Zen Green Tea liquor with fresh lemon juice). DJ's spin nightly, and One--exceeding its own expectations-- stays open until two.

LAUREL CANYON GALLERY, 2128 Laurel Canyon Blvd., L.A.
323-656-6586

A true rock n' roll neighborhood community effort, the Laurel Canyon Gallery opened its doors on July 7, 2007, ten years to the day that co-owner Lilly Falakshahi first brought her infamous coffee cart to the Laurel Canyon Country Store. The landmark art venue fills a void in the hillside quarter that was once home to legendary musicians like Jim Morrison, Joni Mitchell and Frank Zappa. Exhibits from local artists are on rotation. The gallery also sells jewelry

ABODE, 1541 Ocean Ave., Santa Monica
310-394-3463

Riding the wave of the global eco-current, Abode restaurant in Santa Monica is a new hot spot that blends environmentally friendly building materials with urban chic design--outside, a terra cotta tiled courtyard where al fresco dining takes place and inside, sustainable black walnut dining tables. Amidst what might be called the "green period," the folks at Abode have created a work of art in more ways than one. The delicately and creatively prepared dishes are lorded over by Executive Chef Dominique Crenn, a French native whose subtle mélanges have graced eateries from San Francisco to Jakarta. Her ingredients--organic, artisanal and sustainable--make up the culinary wing of Abode's eco-philosophy.

Though there are many adventurous choices on the menu, two must-haves are the Wagyu Beef Tartare with mustard frost, quail eggs, horseradish foam and truffle oil; and the Baby Beets Salad with French goat cheese mousse, wild cress, beet gelée and candied pecans. And if you really feel like pampering your taste buds and the environment be sure to order the $300 Tahitian Black Pearl Martini served with ultra-premium coconut pearl vodka, a splash of blue Curacao and garnished with a AAA 12 mm Tahitian black pearl (appraised at $800). All proceeds from the costly cocktail go to Heal the Bay.
